Airenjuku Aikido

About Us

Aikido, which can be translated as "The Way of Harmony with Universal Energy," is a Japanese martial art that emphasises harmonisation over confrontation. It's a powerful way to train your mind, body, and spirit while learning practical self-defence.

Unlike other martial arts which are usually competitive, Aikido focuses on working with your training partner, making it suitable for all ages, fitness levels, and body types. Join us to improve your fitness, flexibility, core strength, and coordination.

Airenjuku (meaning "Small Hall of Harmonious Practitioners" in Japanese) is a welcoming SOAS Aikido society with over 35 years of history. Our relaxed atmosphere fosters personal growth without the stress of competition. Practising with us isn't just about staying fit – it's also about building friendships and occasionally enjoying a drink at the SOAS bar after training!

SOAS students train for FREE in the Ramla Ali Room (B) in the SU on Tuesdays from 7pm-8:50pm. Come try a class! No experience is needed. Just wear comfortable clothes like tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt.

Any students who are already Aikido practitioners are welcome to come and train with us during their time at SOAS!
