Accessibility

SOAS SU endevours to make all events, venues and opportunities accessibile to all students. If you have any access needs that you would like to discuss with us please visit the SU Offices or email su@soas.ac.uk.

Our Spaces

The SOAS SU space is level access, with the main entrance to the building being accessible via a flight of 7 steps or a 2 section ramp. Most SU entertainment takes place on the ground floor, and there is also a lift in the main lobby of the bulding which gives access to the SU Bar on the lower ground. There are accessible toilets on both floors.

Events

If you would like to bring a personal assistant along to any SOAS SU ticketed event, we offer a free ticket scheme. Please visit the SU Offices or email su@soas.ac.uk to request a free ticket.

A portable induction loop is available in the reception of the Main Building for use in the Students' Union area.

If you are concerned about a ticketed SU event being busy and affecting your ability to have a clear sight of the stage, please contact our Activities & Events Coordinator who will be happy to assist in ensuring a viewing area is set up for you. A viewing area will be set up for you and 1 friend or personal assistant, with room for a chair and/or wheelchair. This space will be reserved to the right hand side of the stage in the JCR unless requested to be elsewhere, and will be monitored throughout the event to ensure it is in use and the space being respected by other attendees.

Website

The SOAS SU website is compatible with screen readers and tablets.

Our website is scalable, so the zoom function can be used to enlarge text without distorting other content.

We have made every effort to ensure our website is fully accessible to all students, in accordance with online accessibility guidelines. If you have any issues using or interacting with any part of our website please do get in touch to alert us to this and we will work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Fire Safety

There are accessible fire exits from both the ground floor of the SU and the lower ground SU Bar. These are clearly signposted.

Travel

Car/Taxi: There is unfortuantely no parking available at SOAS. For taxis, the easiest drop-off point would be Thornhaugh street.

Underground: SOAS is located close to Russell Square, Euston Square, Euston, King's Cross, and Warren Street stations. King's Cross is a fully wheelchair accessible station and has tactile paving.

Bus: All London buses are wheelchair accessible. The following buses serve the area local to SOAS:

  • 7, 68, 91, 168 and 188: Stop on Russell Square
  • 10, 24, 29, 73, and 134: Stop on Tottenham Court Road (north bound) or Gower street (south bound)

Rail: The nearest mainline stations to SOAS are Euston and King's Cross. Both stations have some step free access into the station, however interchange with the underground is not step free.

Non-Accessible Rooms

While the SU space is wheelchair accessible, unfortunately there are a small number of rooms across SOAS which are not accessible for wheelchair users. These rooms are:

  • KLT
  • All rooms in the Faber Building
  • All rooms above the ground floor in 53 Gordon Square
  • 21 and 22 Russell Square Buildings
  • V211 and V111 are only partially accessible (lecture theatres with fixed seating)

Please contact SOAS in the first instance if you are unsure about the accessibility of a room.
