SOAS students for Article 109

About Us

Mission Statement

SOAS Students for Article 109 exists to raise awareness, spark vital conversations, and empower the student body in putting out their opinions on UN charter and more general global governance reform.

SOAS Students for Article 109 advocates for the activation of UN Charter review, via Article 109 of the UN charter, providing youth demand for a democratized, accountable, and decolonized United Nations capable of addressing 21st century crises, with an outlet for expression. This is achieved through our three core pillars: education & research, collective discussion, and policy analysis, each of which play a vital role in achieving real progress towards UN reform.

Goals of the Society:

Our goal is simple: to make sure student voices are heard in the global debate on how the world is governed. We believe that global crises demand modern, equal, and fair global institutions. To turn that vision into reality, our society focuses on three key goals:

1. Education & Research:

We demystify international law and UN structures. Through research projects, teach-ins, and student-led briefings, we break down how the UN Charter works, and where it falls short, so you have the knowledge to challenge the status quo.

2. Spark Collective Discussion:

We create inclusive spaces for genuine debate. From panel discussions with guest speakers to student roundtables, we foster critical conversations about veto power, geopolitical inequality, and how international institutions can be decolonized and reformed.

3. Producing Policy Analysis:

We don’t just talk about change; we put it on paper. Members collaborate to research, draft, and refine policy briefs, position papers, and campaign demands to directly support the global call for activating Article 109.
