Election Results 2024!
From the Deputy Returning Officer:
We would like to congratulate all involved this week with the elections. To the Candidates who campaigned and those that campaigned on their behalf and all the amazing student voters that got involved. This week has shown the best things that a Student Union can be, with students pro-actively seeking to engage and represent the voice of students.
It’s also shown the opposite, where we understand we are all passionate in our beliefs, what has been seen this week has caused ripple effects of disappointment, disengagement and sadness. We have seen behaviors and tactics that are undesirable and unacceptable, in any form within SOAS. We have looked into complaints from multiple candidates that are around Intimidation, Harassment and Bullying. This has has included discriminatory language, pressuring students to vote and interrupting other candidates whilst taking to students. Let this be a reminder that this behaviour is unacceptable, whether we are in elections time or not, and I hope that everyone reflects on what happened this week and supports us in finding a better way. We will be reviewing election practices to stamp out this behaviour and make elections and more positive experience for candidates and voters alike.
Where a candidate has been disqualified, they are able to appeal, therefore where there is a disqualified candidate we will not be able to provide you with a full account of the count until this period has expired.
How does the count work?
In order to win an election, the candidate needs to surpass the quota, the number they need to reach to be elected is half the votes cast in the election + 1. If no candidate surpasses the quota in the first round the candidate(s) with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and their votes redistributed based on the voter's original preference. This continues until a candidate surpasses the quota. In instances where no candidate reaches the quota when only two candidates remain, then the candidate with the highest number of votes is elected.

Co-President Equality and Liberation
1st March 2024 - Due to still being within the appeals period for a disqualified candidate we are unable to publish the count for this election. However, running the count both with the disqualified candidate included and without them included returned the same winner. This means that we are able to state the winning candidate in this election at this time.
