Where: Main Building, Room 223
Sambatage is SOAS's samba-fusion activist band. We're part of a protest music movement founded in the mid-1990s that has spread worldwide. Sambatage has supported demonstrations by SOAS student campaigns such as Justice for Workers and the Palestine Society, played on the picket line to support striking workers, and joined protests held by a variety of anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and anti-sexist organisations. We've joined climate marches with organisations like Fridays for Future, including at COP26 in Glasgow. We also perform at student events such as late licences and plays.
Joining us is a great way to get involved in student politics at SOAS and activism in London. Being part of a band can be a safer and more inclusive way to join demos if you're new to the city or to protests, as you're part of a group that takes care of each other.
You don't have to go to protests to join us, making music as part of a community band is a radical act in itself! We welcome absolute beginners with no music experience, and have some light handheld instruments that can be played while seated.
