Here's a bit about me;

Here’s a bit about me. I was the first in my family to apply to Uni, and studied at a secondary school that was (sorry Mr Richards) shite. When I came to SOAS to Study Social Anthropology, I’m sure like many of us, I had a rough start; I considered changing dropping out many-a-time. Despite the widening participation schemes, I strongly believe that SOAS SU can do a lot more to support student who – maybe like me – feel initially disillusioned in the whole ‘university experience’.

Reflecting on how my own perspective has changed, I really believe that learning at SOAS can be life changing. However, as we all know, our critical education has been fought for by us – the students – and lead by the lecturers, not the institution. Along with the democracy and campaigns officer, I would encourage and initiate a continuous challenge towards the management of our education. Especially in light of the cuts. No, our education is not free but this doesn’t mean that it cannot be in our control.

Manifesto;

PREVENTING PREVENT – As well as continuing the ongoing campaigns, I would challenge the use of security and administration on campus with management. Encourage serious questions to be asked; do we want CCTV in the courtyard? Security check at the door and locked rooms? How is this changing our environment?

WELFARE FOR ALL – Integrate the welfare of students across the board at SOAS by continuing the Justice for Cleaners campaign, ensuring that in-house staff are getting fair working conditions.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH / NO MEANS NO – Continuing and empowering discussion about consent, ensuring all late licenses and SOAS events have paid enough-is enough staff.

STUDENT ADVICE AND WELLBEING - Improving the use of and communications between the student advice and wellbeing centre and the student body.

RAISING WELFARE ISSUES WITH MANAGEMENT – In the last meeting with management, many claims of sexual violence’s being reported to management but not dealt with. I would want to improve this communication between students and management.

Endorsements;
