ASSMA KURDY

Hi guys! My name is Assma, I’m a third year law student and I’m running to be your NUS Delegate this year :)

Some of my policies are as follows:

1) Supporting SOAS campaigns nationally e.g. BDS, fossil free etc.

2) #CutTheCosts: working with MPs to oppose the government’s maintenance grant cuts and its embedded discrimination against students from lower income households

3) Supporting international students: campaigning for the extension of the post-study work visa, as well as getting UK institutions to agree to a fixed rate for international student fees. Very often students face unanticipated increases in their fees whilst studying. I will push for the NUS to increase awareness of these obstacles and to continue its support for international students via various campaigns

4) Free education: it has been almost 5 years since the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition tripled university fees to £9,000 but addressing this scandal remains vitally important. The cost of education should not be the focal point in students’ decision to go to university

5) Fighting discrimination: tackling Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, homophobia, sexism on university campuses

If you have any questions or queries feel free to approach me in uni or drop me an email on 584745@soas.ac.uk.

I hope to be your voice at the NUS National Conference 2015!
