About Us
The Harmony with Nature Society is dedicated to promoting non-anthropocentric approaches to law, economics, and other disciplines in response to today’s environmental challenges. We explore and advocate for frameworks such as Rights of Nature, Earth Jurisprudence, Ecocide law, and Ecological Economics—approaches that recognize the intrinsic value of Nature beyond its utility to humans.
At our core, we believe in reimagining the human-Earth relationship as one of interdependence and reciprocity, fostering systems that support the wellbeing of all life. Through discussions, events, and collaborations, we aim to inspire critical thinking and collective action for a more just and sustainable world.
We host a wide range of events including interactive workshops, guest speaker panels, documentary screenings, hands-on ecological projects, and seasonal planting days—all designed to bridge theory with practice and build community around environmental justice and stewardship.
Pollinator Patch Project
Growing Biodiversity on Campus
In the face of accelerating biodiversity loss across the UK, initiatives like our Planting Day are more important than ever. Urban spaces—especially in cities like London—play a crucial role in supporting pollinators, restoring habitat corridors, and reconnecting people with the natural world. By planting a variety of pollinator-friendly species in repurposed pots around our campus courtyard, we’re not only beautifying the space, but actively contributing to ecological resilience in the heart of the city.
In May 2025, we’re planting a carefully selected mix of native and non-native species known to support bees, butterflies, and other vital pollinators. These include primrose, lungwort, copper shield fern, lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Each of these plants offers nectar and shelter, supporting a range of insects that are essential to ecosystems and food production, yet increasingly under threat from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.
This project is a collaborative effort between the Harmony with Nature Society, the Beekeeping Society, and the SOAS Estates Team, with support from the SOAS Student Union and the University of London Sustainability Teams. Together, we’re working to create more inclusive, student-driven sustainability projects that leave a lasting positive impact on our environment. By getting involved, students become stewards of their shared space and contribute directly to London’s wider green infrastructure.
