AMBER LAKHANI

As an international PhD student at SOAS, I am acutely aware of the challenges faced by research students in relation to the financial sustainability of doctoral studies, and its impact on mental health. Moreover, one of the biggest challenges I faced in my first year was in terms of connecting with other PhD students, and being able to share my experiences and difficulties with other students in the same position. Having lived near campus during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have acquired a sensitive understanding of the importance of a reliable and supportive network of research students, and I was proactive in establishing a support group for PhD in Law students.

As a RSA Board member, I would focus on representing current issues faced by research students, including but not limited to:

- Increasing remote and on-site resources (e.g. broadening access to e-journals and databases, and expanding library access);

- Facilitating workshops for building skills and sharing experiences (e.g. fieldwork experiences, and skill-building in various research methods)

- Exploring sources of financial support, funding and other resources for continuing students

-  Establishing an efficient channel of communication between the students and the SOAS administration.

- Working towards broadening support and interaction amongst research students, both on-campus and outside UK and across all levels of study, in order to maintain a warm, active and supportive community for PGR students.
