Manifesto

Hello, my name is Monica T. Tran. I am currently a LLM Interntional Law student as SOAS. I am running for Arts & Culture Officer. I felt that this position was the most suitable for someone like me. I was born and raised in Bratislava, Slovakia and my parents are from Vietnam.

During my undergraduate degree I worked as a Vice President of Vietnamese students society (Vietsoc) in Leeds. As a society we worked on many events such as Lunar New Year, Fresher welcoming parties, or social gatherings. Our Lunar New Year was successful and it was also mentioned in the biggest Vietnamese newspapers. Most recent was a football tournament called SVUK Cup which takes every year. Last year, I had the opportunity being an organisor. The tournament was between Vietnamsese students all across the UK and it attracted over 300 students.

I also worked as an intern for the Vietnamese Embassy in Slovakia. I mostly did reports, responding to emails and welcoming other Ambassadors from different countries. This gave me an opportunity to meet lots of people of different backgrounds. From Ambassadors to people from different departments. I believe that it is important to also have communication skills and engage with people. It is okay to ask questions but it needs to be done with respect.

While finishing my undergraduate I worked as a Global Ambassador for my university. The role was to welcome and help international students. We planned cultural events such as Lunar New Year or Diwali festivals for international students. It is always hard to settle in new country and culture so we wanted to make sure to international students were not feeling homesick.

Key Campaign Points:

1. Make sure everyone feels weclome no matter where they come from

Sometimes it is hard to settle in new enviroment especially when you just moved to a new country. I want to make sure everyone feels safe and welcome. I want to help create social events where students have the opportunity to engage in activities and socialise with other students. Students will have the opportunity to meet people of different as welll as similar backgrounds.

2. Listen to students' concerns such as cultural representation and discrimination within the university

As an officer its main job is to represent students. Therefore, it is important to listen to students' concern and problems and work with the SU to address these concerns.

3. Representation

As an officer I would represent the SU through active citizenship and engagement with other societies. Previously, I volunteered at community events thrown by the Embassy. I would encourage students to participate and engage in social activities. As well as represent my university at other univerties' events.
