About Us

SOAS Shorinji Kempo society teaches a modern Japanese martial art which is a balanced system of self defence and self development. Classes are suitable for everyone, there is no prior experience required - beginners are always welcome! Classes are 7:00pm -9:00pm every Tuesday and every thursday in the new studio on the bottom floor of the Russell Square Main Building, and are FREE for SOAS students.

Shorinji Kempo incorporates effective self defence techniques with philosophy and meditation. The training aims to develop the potential of the individual and create balanced people, both mentally and physically, whilst instilling students with the confidence needed to stand up for their ideals and the ability to defend their position. In this way they can help others and benefit society as a whole.

The self defence techniques incorporate both hard and soft techniques: 'Goho' and 'Juho'. Goho is the hard or active system, comprising swift and accurate techniques involving punches, kicks, dodges and blocks. Juho is the soft or passive system, used when grabbed or held against one's will. They comprise releasing, throwing or subduing the opponent through the manipulation of body mechanics, pressure points and balance. The two systems are used hand in hand to create a unique all round system of self defence based on technique rather than strength, capable of repelling any form of attack.

The teachings also include 'Seiho' and meditation. Seiho is a therapeutic accupressure massage system used to relax muscles, relieve tension and regulate circulation. Meditation is practiced during the middle of every class to calm the mind and encourage breathing control.

Traning is free for SOAS students!

Our training times are
