Supporting Student Parents

The Students' Union has been working to ensure that SOAS provides adequate childcare support for student parents.

We raised our concerns about the level of support currently available to parents studying at SOAS at the School's Student Experience Committee on 28 January. You can read the paper we submitted here

At present, SOAS does not collect data on how many students have caring responsibilites for a child presenting a huge impediment to ensuring that adequate resources are put in place to support them. It is clear from the students that have spoke to us already that what the School currently has in place is inadequate.

Please take the opportunity to share your experiences of being a student parent in the form at the bottom of the page so that we can use these to make the case to SOAS to improve their childcare provision.

Student Parents & Child Care

Being a student parent is a very challenging experience, and we know that juggling studying and caring responsibilities can sometimes be difficult and daunting.

This page is designed to give you some useful information that can help you organize your life as a student parent and find the support you need when you need it!

We are also gonna be starting a Student Parents Peer Support Group for student parents to meet, share experiences and advice and also, very importantly, socialize! We will be sending out information at the beginning of term. If you are interested and would like to be involved, or have any suggestions, please send an email to

Childcare facilities

Unfortunately, SOAS does not have a creche or a nursery of its own, even if we have campaigned to obtain one in the past.
SOAS students can however apply for nursery places within the University of London and in the local area. If you require nursery provision in other areas, you should ask for information from the local council. There is great competition for nursery places so put your name on the waiting list as early as possible!

If you feel like SOAS’ childcare provision is inadequate and should be reviewed, please get in touch with us as we are here to represent you and your needs.

Two years ago we have managed to secure a room that mothers can use to breast feed; it is on the 1st floor of the Russel Square Campus and you can get the access code from Peter Baran in room G7.
