Election statements:

Ahmed Mahamoud Ahmed

I should be voted as student rep because I will do my best to make your degree experience to be as straightforward as possible. My goal during meetings would be to openly discuss with academics how the students are coping with studies and how the experiences could be more enhanced, by factoring the students concerns. My personal character is someone who constantly seeks to push themselves forward at every opportunity available therefore I applied for this position. I am hoping that my ambition for a successful degree at University will enable me to be an excellent student rep. My communication skills especially listening to others is a great asset as it will suite my position for this role. This is because I will be able to take on board other people’s views by attentively listening to others, thus will be open and approachable. By gathering the student’s perceptions I will then be able to transfer this to the academics as my open demeanour will allow them to adhere to my comments.

Huda Elmi and Latifa Ali (job share)

As enthusiastic and passionate History students, we want to be positive contributors to the department as a whole. In conjunction with Huda, we hope to interact and engage with the course to increase student satisfaction and facilitate a smooth transition through the year. Past experiences ranging from Student Ambassador work to society related skills highlight that we are personable, approachable and efficient. We want to be that buffer between students and faculty, in order to communicate grievances and improve quality of teaching. Most importantly, if you want this coming year to be fun VOTE LATIFA AND HUDA!!!

Kamran Ahmed

Hi everyone, I believe I will be a suitable candidate for student rep for a number of reasons. Firstly, my kind, humble heart will allow me to understand and translate any problems or queries on to relevant members of the support team. I feel my ability to talk will also be vital in securing this position as talking is a major aspect of communication. Just ask my tutors how much I talk in their tutorials. Finally I believe that I have a smile that can light up the entire universe. This is important as I would like to be seen as welcoming and open for anyone to approach.

Nisha Phillipps

Hi there everyone,

I have had a lovely time being your first year history representative and would like the opportunity to continue to represent you next year. I feel like I have learnt a lot, but that I still have a lot to learn in order to make sure that all of your concerns are recognised and that your studies at SOAS continue to be enjoyable.

There are several goals that I have for next year. I would like to organise an history alumni event and networking session (which is currently in the works) to show you the opportunities that a history degree can give you. I would also like to organise more student events, including a trip to the archives at Kew. Finally, I would like to make sure that Black History month and Women’s History month do not go without celebration at SOAS, ideally organising events or lectures to commemorate these.

By working with you all I want to make sure that everyone can get the most out of their history degree.

Love,

Nisha
