About the Play - Our Vaginas, Ourselves

In 2012, BCome, a Beijing-based sister organisation of vaChina, wrote and produced a 1.5-hours long play named Our Vaginas, Ourselves which adopted the theme and structure of Vagina Monologues. Inspired by the Eve Ensler’s call for the celebration of womanhood, Bcome based the script of Our Vaginas, Ourselves on real interviews and real stories of women in China about their opinions and experiences, showing an unique Chinese perspective regarding gender issues such as virginity, stigmatisation of sex, as well as LGBTQIA equality. As an exploration, new elements such as traditional Chinese cross-talk and interactive discussions are introduced to the play to take it beyond the traditional form of monologue and to further engage the audience. Up until 2017, Bcome has successfully performed 29 shows in 5 major cities around China, educating the public through the medium of performative art. Now in 2018, VaChina will bring their performance to the stage in London and share with the audience 9 of the best scenes from the play.

The show will be performed in Chinese with English subtitles projected on screen.

Eve Ensler’s feminist classic, the play Vagina Monologues inspired feminists around the world. In 2003, the play was introduced by Sun Yat-sen University Professor Ai Xiaoming to the Chinese audience and was staged at Guangdong Museum of Art. From then on, Chinese adaptation and production based on Vagina Monologues spread all over China. Our Vaginas, Ourselves is one of the plays born out of this inspiration.
