Working alongside your studies? Find out how you can keep your boss in check, and grow the power of your colleagues by organising in a union!
Studying & Working? Join a Trade Union!
When: Wed 04 October 2017 17:00-19:00
Where: Room 116, 1st Floor, SOAS Main Building
This will be an interactive workshop exploring 'Why join a trade union?' for students.
Alongside the Students' Union, this session will be run by experienced organisers from SOAS UNISON (who represent non-academic staff at SOAS), the Bakers' Union (BFAWU, who organised the #McStrike action) and IWGB Couriers & Logistics Branch (who organise with Uber drivers and Deliveroo workers amongst many others on precarious contracts).
There will be space for smaller group discussions focussing on how to build a union in your workplace & what a union can do for you. We will also address the kind of issues that students might be facing in their workplace, and how a union might or might not be useful in these situations. But also, it would be to move away from any impression that simply paying a membership will be enough to have a strong & active union in their workplace.
