From 20th February – 13th March 2020, staff across the university who are members of UCU and UNISON will be taking strike action over 14 days.
The University and College Union (UCU) represents over 110,000 academics, lecturers, trainers, instructors, researchers, managers, administrators, computer staff, librarians and postgraduates in universities, colleges, prisons, adult education and training organisations across the UK. You can read what the SOAS UCU branch have to say on their website: https://ucusoas.wixsite.com/strike2020 Teach-Outs are also included there!
On Monday 3rd February 2020, it was announced that UCU voted in favour of strike action to protest against the following issues:
- A 12% BME pay gap
- A 21% drop in pay since 2009
- A loss of approximately £240,000 in pensions
- Precarious work contracts for staff
- Ever-increasing workloads
- More marketisation of education
The dispute has been going on for months (even years!) now. See a UCU timeline with information here. Now, they have reached a point where there are 74 universities across the UK who's staff members are going on strike during February and March. You can read more about who are these on the UCU website here.
Ultimately our lecturers have no other way to stop this - after many meetings and negotiations, striking is their only option left. This action is their leverage to change conditions. This actually could force the USS trustees (the organisation responsible) back to the negotiating table and change the future of education. Together, we want to create an education system that is funded, accessible and lifelong. We need to protect education together.
