The SOAS Syria Society aims to raise awareness about the current situation in Syria as well as celebrating Syrian food, music, history and culture. Through events, fundraisers and meetings, the society offers Syrians and non-Syrians who are interested in the country, the culture and the dynamics of the revolution, a place to discuss, debate and come together. Therefore, we aim to create a platform where participants can share their projects, initiatives and opinions freely in order to create a strong and widespread Syria solidarity movement. The ongoing Syrian conflict and humanitarian crisis and a pressing concern. The peaceful demonstrations, which broke out in 2011 and were met with extreme violence by the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, have escalated into a civil war that has led to a serious humanitarian tragedy, the greatest of the 21st century. Since then, mass assassinations, rape, siege of entire populations, torture, imprisonment of the opposition and bombings have been used indiscriminately. Besides, religious fundamentalism, nurtured by a regime clinging to power by all means, persecuted and attacked above all the organised civil society fighting for democracy and social justice. The SOAS Syria Society acts as a platform to the various civil initiatives (both inside and outside Syria) seeking to denounce all crimes against humanity and fighting to build a democratic, plural and just country, free from dictatorships and authoritarianism of all kinds. It advocates for the investigation by international courts of all war crimes and that those responsible be held accountable. The Society functions based on the principles of democracy, respect for diversity and equality.
