Welcome to SOAS Pencak Silat Society!

Pencak Silat (pronounced Penchak Silat), derives from groups of full-body, holistic and adaptive fighting styles originating from the Indonesian/Malay archipelago, which includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Pencak Silat is a physical, and a psychological practice, and teaches you to control your body and your mind.

The practice’s structural teachings have been acknowledged for as long as 1,500 years. Pencak Silat is a contributory enricher of Indonesian cultural heritage and has thrived throughout the centuries.

Today, Pencak Silat is recognised and registered with UNESCO as traditional martial art.

Most Pencak Silat schools now incorporate:
Beladiri (self-defense),
Seni (artistic), and
Olahraga/Tanding (sport) aspects,

with individual teachers varying the emphasis placed upon each of the elements.

Silat formed part of an education, and was an integral part of a path to maturation.
