SOAS REBETIKO BAND SOCIETY
By a democratic decision of the SOAS Student Union, Monday night has been declared “Rebetiko Night @ SOAS”. On that night you will find the SOAS Rebetiko Band in the JCR performing the Greek “urban blues” music known as Rebetiko – along with the musics of neighbouring countries.
The SOAS Rebetiko Society exists to further the study and performance of Rebetiko. For a Greek band we are rather special, because we also welcome Turkish singers and musicians in our membership. Admission to our sessions is free and is also open to non-SOAS people.
If you want to learn to play Greek music, sing Greek songs, or do Greek dancing, come along to our rehearsals (Russell Room, every Monday during term time, from 6.30pm).
We organise regular gigs, concerts, and overseas tours (including Istanbul, Athens, and Paris). And in October every year we travel to the international Rebetiko Gathering on the Island of Hydra [Greece].
During 2017-18 we shall also organise a monthly Greek Solidarity evening, including seminar talks and films about Greek music. Particularly about the maqam / dromoi system of Middle Eastern music.
