Nippon Kempo is a little known but unique and effective competitive combat sport. It was the original successful mixing of the martial arts.
It was created in 1932 by Muneumi Sawayama. It’s not based on archaic martial rituals or shrouded in oriental mysticism. Instead Sawayama, a Japanese university professor, felt there was a need for a modern scientific combat sport and devised Nippon Kempo with unique protective armour, so that participants could fight realistically but without injury.
Nippon Kempo is the oldest martial arts club at SOAS (since 1980) and many of the instructors are SOAS alumni. There are opportunities to train in London and visit other clubs in the UK, Europe and Japan.
The club is free to SOAS students and the protective armour is supplied by the club. It is open to all shapes and sizes: the beauty of Nippon Kempo is that you learn to adjust your techniques to overcome your opponent. Experience in other martial arts is not required.
