SOAS Radio is an independent online radio station based at SOAS. We work with students and academics to produce radio programmes, sharing the knowledge of SOAS with a world-wide audience and helping students engage directly with the parts of the world they are studying. We provide training in all things radio and welcome any interested SOAS students and alumni!

The station produces speech and music programmes working with students, staff and like-minded communities, and contributions from leading international figures in education, politics, the arts and the media. Notable recordings include the former Prime Minister of Mozambique Luisa Diogo, Noam Chomsky, Fatima Bhutto, Bollywood director Yash Chopra, Entrepreneur Danny Choo, Manu Chao, Amadou and Mariam and Jarvis Cocker. Zeinab Badawi, BBC Presenter said: “As both a broadcast journalist and a SOAS alumna, I’m pleased to see the growth of SOAS Radio. It’s an outlet for the incredible diversity of voices at the School as well as a much-needed training ground for the next generation of broadcasters.”

The station hosts the course Presenting World Music on Radio with Lucy Duran, presenter of the programmes World Routes and Music Planet on BBC Radio 3, and Miia Laine, Station Manager of SOAS Radio. The course was the recipient of the Director’s Teaching Prize 2009 for its combination of academic and practical learning outcomes.

Get involved

SOAS Radio would not exist without the support of its dedicated volunteers. To date many of the duties associated with developing the station have ranged from coordinating volunteers, running the studio and radio desk, fundraising, editing, program making and web-design. Training can be provided in all fields, and we have well-established systems, so please don’t feel daunted if you are a complete beginner, a willingness to get involved and be dedicated is enough!

Call for Presenters:

SOAS Radio is seeking to recruit presenters with specific show ideas based on the fields that SOAS covers. Have an idea for a great radio show? Get in touch with a one paragraph blurb about the show itself (and tell us why you’re interested in that topic separately). Please keep in mind that studio time is at a premium so we cannot offer every show proposal a recording slot.

Email your proposal to: studio@soasradio.org
