SOAS CEILIDH BAND
You are invited to join the famous SOAS Ceilidh Band (pronounced cay-lee). Our band plays the traditional dance music of the British Isles and Ireland.
We organise ceilidh dances and each year we play, tour and gig around SOAS, in London and even overseas.
We invite new members to JOIN THE BAND – fiddles, flutes, guitars, drums, whatever you play. No audition, just turn up. And if you want to learn an instrument, talk to us. We rehearse at SOAS every Thursday evening during term time, from 7.00pm.
We are also planning numerous gigs around SOAS including a reinstated Full Moon Ceilidh which will happen, naturally enough, on every full moon. We'll also play gigs on St Andrews Day (a celebration of Scotish tunes), St Patricks Day (a celebration of our Irish tunes), Burns Night (with complimentary whisky and Haggis) as well as on many other important dates.
Additionaly we play a number of other gigs. In Spring we often have a marmalade session in the JCR where, as the name suggests, we make marmalade and play tunes. At the end of each academic year we also play tunes on a punt in Cambridge for most of a day before supping ale in a local pub and playing the evening away.
In March 2018 we are planning a musical trip to Kurdistan (Iraq / Iran). We shall also be doing return tours to Paris, Istanbul, Venice. Not to mention Cairo on 9-14 November 2017. An amazing year. If you want to join any of these trips, write to ed.emery@soas.ac.uk
This is just a small selection of the fun stuff we get up to in a year. Interested? Then just e-mail ceilidh@soas.ac.uk to join our mailing list and/or for a copy of our tunebook from which we play every week.
By the way, we also like to sing…
