Thinking of starting a society or sports team?
But make sure you do it well to do it right,
make it last.
Old and new societies and sports teams on our wonderfully eclectic list (check our society list here) must ALL (re)register by filling in the online form (you must log in with your SOAS ID).
There are also three simple conditions to consider in order to set up a society/sports team:
a)You have to create a committee made of a President, Treasurer and Secretary.
b) You must also read the Society Guidelines here. SOCIETY GUIDELINES (YOU MUST READ THIS) This contains all the information you need for running the society and lots of information about what you can or can’t do, how to book rooms, etc.
c) Submit your membership list to the SU. You need at least sixteen names on your list before you become and official society. You can print off the membership form here , or pick some up from the SU office G8.
Budgets can then be allocated after you have completed the above conditions. Here’s a short video made by Ben Sellers who was sabbatical officer of SOAS back in 2009 – it was so darn good and he’s so darn charming, it’s hard to beat let alone delete. Have a look through to understand how to apply for your budget and how they are allocated.
Here is a budget form, you don’t have to use it but its a simple way to itemise what you want to bid for.
An annual plan is useful to map out what you’d like to achieve for the year to come and serves as a good reference point for future committee members and is a great way to stay accountable to your members to show what you have done.
An annual plan can also lead on to an ANNUAL REPORT which can be used further for sponsorship opportunities and endorsement from SOAS as well as other partnering bodies, check out the debating society for a good example of what this looks like.

If you’d like to thrash out a few ideas or if you have any confusion over the process, don’t hesitate to come by and ask! Our door is always open and it’s always great to meet the minds that keep sports and societies growing bigger and going further!
