Education

Welcome to the Education section of the SOAS Students' Union website!

In this page you can find information about the Students' Union ongoing education campaigns, as well as updates on current education related issues, at SOAS and beyond.

Education at SOAS

Education was overwhelmingly voted in the SOAS Students' Union 2010 Strategic Referendum as the top priority on which to focus SOAS Students' Union activity in the next 5 years. This means that SOAS students care about it, which is indeed reassuring!
To work towards the realization of our own strategic aims in relation to improvement of education standards at SOAS, we are constantly working with student reps, departments, faculties and other areas of the School to monitor what are the issues, the needs, the improvements that need to take place in SOAS' educational provision – and, very importantly, how we can achieve them! To check out our ongoing work around educational provision in SOAS, check out our SU EDUCATIONAL PRIORITIES page!

If you wanna report a problem related to education or academic life that you have encountered during your time at SOAS, please email Arianna, Co-President Welfare and Education, on welfare.ed@soas.ac.uk or Joe, Academic Affairs Officer, on academic@soas.ac.uk . As you know, we cannot change things, unless you tell us what the problem is…

Defend Education, Save our Studies!

As you probably know, Higher Education has come under several attacks from the Government in the past year – with funding being cut, tuition fees tripling and plans for privatisation under way as outlined in the new Government White Paper.

SOAS Students' Union has openly condemned the government's reforms of the Higher Education system, in relation to the increases in tuitition fees, the cuts to funding and the plans for marketisation and privatisation of the White Paper. In line with our Union policy passed at a number of Union General Meetings, we are committed to fighting the government's proposal and to continue campaigning against tuition fees increases, against all cuts to education and public sector, in favour of free education, and against the Higher Education White Paper. We are supporting the National Demonstration in defence of education and against privatisation which has been called for November 9th by NCAFC and is supported by NUS, as well as the public sector strikes on November 30th, and we will be mobilizing students to make sure that our voices are heard loud and clear! Check the Campaigns section of this website for more information.
