Spring 2013

Here are the results of the SOAS SU Elections 2013, as counted tonight with the SU Returning Officer Jim Dickinson from NUS. He has ratified these results, but if there are any queries please direct them in the first instance to pb14@soas.ac.uk

It was a well run and clean campaign this year and the number of valid votes was 1454, the second highest turnout in SOAS SU history. I would like to thank the candidates for running a clean issue based campaign.

SOAS SU runs a Single Transferable Vote election which means if no candidate gets a 50% majority in the first round, candidates are knocked out and their votes reallocated until they get a clear majority. For more info on the voting see here http://youtu.be/AECbHLAw9zs . For simplicity the results below show the vote in the first round, and then the final result. Again if you would like to see interim rounds, please contact Peter Baran. (Note the result below do not include the spoils / no votes for each election which varies for each individual elections)

A recount was requested for Accommodation Officer as it was so close. This was carried out on the 13/3/13 – and the updated result is below. The number of votes changed slightly, but the result did not.

Spring 2012

Thanks to everyone for voting in this year’s elections, the results are now in. Thank you to all of the candidates for their hard work, and they can get back to their degrees now. The Union uses Single Transferable Vote for the election, which means if no-one gets 50% of the valid vote in the first round, the second preferences of the least popular candidates are used, until the the quota is met. For more detail on how STV work see here.

The turnout was 1282. The results are as follows:

* The ruling from Jim Dickinson the Returning Officer was as follows:

At the close of polls a complaint was received relating to the campaign expenditure of Chuck Madekwe. An investigation was conducted which centred on the number of posters that had been purchased by the candidate and declared in receipts, and the apparent discrepancy between the declared number and the number on display across campus.

Having received evidence and put the issues to the candidate, in my view the campaign breached clearly defined expenditure limits and as such I rule the candidate be disqualified from the election. Any preferences for Chuck should be passed over during the count with papers redistributed to other candidates where possible.

Spring 2011 Election Results

Please find below the results of the recent Students Union Election which has been balloted all of this week. The Union’s Co-Returning Officer, Nell Andrew of NUS has certified these following results as correct and the underlined candidates will make up the Union’s Executive and Trustees for 2011-12.

Nell (and Emma the co-returning officer) would like to thank all of the candidates for the exemplary conduct during the election, which was certainly the best natured in my experience. In addition to that, the turnout was 1307 (including 28 votes from students overseas). This is about the same as last years turnout and is our third highest ever.

A brief note on the electoral system. We use a Single Transferable Vote system, which is designed to elect the LEAST UNPOPULAR candidate. To win an election, a candidate must get 50% of the eligable vote. If this is not achieved, the candidate with the least votes is eliminated and the next preference of those votes are added to the other candidates. This continues until the quota is reached (as in the case of Sports & Societies below), or there are no candidates left to be eliminated.

The Results then:
