Christina Swarns (NAACP Legal Defence and Educational Fund), Mumia Abu-Jamal’s lead lawyer, will be in London on 16th September for one day.  She will speak about the latest developments in his case.  Ms Swarns has been part of the Abu-Jamal legal team for some years. Her submissions on the issue of racism in jury selection were a crucial part of the appeal submitted in May 2007.

Ms Swarns visits just as a new book by Mumia (as he is known to millions) is launched in the UK.

Jailhouse Lawyers: Prisoners Defending Prisoners v the USA speaks for the creative and determined movement of prisoners who use the law against the legal establishment. It is published just as prisoners in the US demonstrate their massive movement against prisons as concentration camps of repression, humiliation and other injustice, with work strikes, hunger strikes and other courageous actions, crossing racial divides.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist whose conviction in 1982 for killing a policeman aimed to end his years of exposing racism and other corruption.  His trial was drenched in racism: while Philadelphia was 43% Black, only two jurors were African-American.  Throughout almost three decades on death row, Mumia Abu-Jamal has continued to speak out against injustice and to organise for his freedom and for that of other prisoners.  This is his sixth book.

Hello Friends,

We can't wait any longer to let you know about our October launches and other exciting events.

RUN THE SAHARA 2012 launch

On October 1st we will hold a multi-media event to launch our 4th annual campaign of Run the Sahara to raise funds for Studio-Live and connect British people directly to the Saharawi refugees through their participation in the long distance races held in the camps in SW Algeria.

The screening of award-winning film El Problema (http://www.elproblema.net) will precede the launch at 3pm and feature a panel discussion with film director Pablo Vidal and a young Saharawi human rights activist. The launch proper begins at 5pm with readings of Saharawi poetry and short stories  by poet and playwrite Inua Ellams, followed by a sneak viewing of an excerpt from the long- awaited documentary, The Runner, by Saeed Taji Farouky, about the life of world- class athlete  Saharawi Salah Ameidan. Former participants in Run the Sahara will share their stories and give people a chance to find out more about the experience. We will of course be encouraging all those who are thinking of going to take the leap and sign up and register on the day! We hope to galvanize at least 25 people for 2012, so we will need the help of all our supporters to spread the word and bring friends and colleagues along to make the launch a success.

STUDIO-LIVE launch

On October 6th, in partnership with Fairtunes, we will be launching Studio-Live, our exciting music empowerment project to enable artists in the refugee camps to develop professionally and reach international audiences through music. It will take place at Darbucka in Clerkenwell, who have generously offered the venue for the event.  The launch coincides with the digital release of Tiris's debut album Sandtracks by Believe Digital. Sahara Cabaret Extravaganza

On Tuesday 6th Sept Olive Branch Theatre in partnership with Sandblast Arts is holding a Cabaret Evening to raise money for their 2011 Saharawi Refugee Youth Theatre project.

Last year the funds raised enabled Olive Branch to establish a theatre group in the camps and produce an amazing piece of theatre. This year they will return to share their skills again and support young people to produce a show that will tour the primary schools on the camps.  Please come along and show your support. There are limited spaces so please visit: http://www.justgiving.com/olivebranchtheatre and add your name to the guest list. Spread the word and bring friends. If you can't make it and are feeling generous please go ahead and donate…every penny counts and will make a difference!
