NUS National Conference took place in Sheffield on April 24th – 26th. SOAS SU was represented by its two elected delegates, Kristian Bruun and Arianna Tassinari, and by one observer, Riya Al Sanah.
It was an extremely interesting, political and heated conference, that passed some of the strongest policy in relation to Higher Education funding and on how to resist the government’s attacks on educa
tion that NUS has had in years.
Some of the highlights include, very importantly, that NUS will finally be calling for a National Demonstration against the White Paper and against all cuts to education in the Autumn term of 2012, which is exactly what SOAS SU had been calling for the past year and a half. Many of the other policies we had submitted from SOAS SU were also passed, including an important motion on postgraduate education funding that is particularly important for our large postgraduate student population.
You can find a full report from the SOAS delegation here (Report from NUS National Conference 2012). Have a read, and if you have any questions, get in touch! And let’s all start getting excited for the National Demo next Autumn. We’ll have to make it big and strong, and SOAS students will have a big role to play in that.
